SPD-puppet Jo Leinen exposes the real reason for the new EU electoral law
Yesterday, the European Parliament cleared the way for a new European electoral law, as reported. Among other things, it provides for the introduction of an electoral treshold, which according to Eurocrates‘ ideas can range between two and five percent. These tresholds are fundamentally undemocratic, because they diminish the electoral chances of smaller parties – for that reason, the German Federal Constitutional Court has removed, before the last European elections in 2014, the then existing three percent threshold in Germany.
Immediately after the decisive vote on Wednesday, one of the driving forces behind the questionable electoral reform, the German SPD deputy Jo Leinen, admitted frankly in a press conference: the real purpose of the new EU electoral threshold is to keep the NPD as an ‘unwanted’ opposition party outside the European Parliament in the future. Asked by a journalist if the introduction of election tresholds was not „undemocratic“, Leinen answered literally:
„It can not be that 26 member states have election tresholds – that’s nothing new – and two have none, and that we have the chairman of the German Nazi party in the European Parliament, because he can have a seat with 0.6 percent of the vote . “
Another journalist formulated doubts about the new European election tresholds: he argued that the seven non-attached individual deputies from Germany represent there two million voters, who cannot just be dropped under the table. Leinen: „No, that’s not undemocratic. Then it would also be undemocratic that we have in the federal elections a five percent election threshold and even in state elections five percent tresholds… “
However, in recent years the Karlsruhe Constitutional Court has twice declared the German election threshold for the European elections void. In 2014, on the initiative of the NPD, the three percent hurdle fell. It will also have to rule on this new electoral threshold as a discrimination against the NPD and other smaller parties and as en attempt to silence a real critical voice in the European Parliament.
