What the EU-Commission is really up to: Udo Voigt says it frankly
The first Vice-President of the European Commission, Franz Timmermans, yesterday spoke about the “recent developments in Poland and its impact on the rule of law” in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European parliament. The Commissioner repeatedly pointed out that the EU had demanded Poland many times to comply with the ban on deforestation in the Bialowieza region – here, according to Timmermans, the government in Warsaw ignored specific rulings by the European Court of Justice (ECJ). Therefore, it was said, the Commission is now seeking to initiate an infringement procedure under Article 7 (1) TEU against Poland.
While the communist Left, the Greens and the Liberals welcomed this request, it was German nationalist NPD-Member of Parliament Udo Voigt who spoke frankly about the Commissions’ motives.
He accused Timmermans of hypocrisy when he said in the committee that he and the Commission were politically neutral when it came to the rule of law. In reality, Timmermans and the Commission have been massively in favor of the opposition for months, and have interfered actively in the national political discussions in Poland. He was less concerned with the deforestation of a forest than with the strong immigration policy of the Polish government. Those who want to eradicate monocultural states, as Timmermans, question the sovereignty of Poland. Finally, the German NPD MEP said, the government in Warsaw is a result of free elections and Poland, contrary to the neighbouring country Germany, is a fully sovereign country. He therefore demanded the Commission to accept the will of the majority of the Polish people, and to not support any infringement procedure against Poland.
